Penelope Cruz, Eva Mendes, and more: Things That Make People Go… Hmmmmm!
To say that we get a kick out of PETA campaigns is an understatement. By now, everyone knows that celebrities are paid handsomely – monetarily and/or through media exposure – to lend their names and images (i.e. their celebrity) to Ad campaigns.
With some of these celebrities (a word enlarged and used loosely), the campaigns often take on a humorous twist. Seriously, a porno actress for animal neutering is rather amusing. A tattooed athlete fallen-from-grace promoting “ink over mink” has its moments too. The ultimate hilarity went with OctoMom! Why use her of all people? Is this the best they can do?
Surprisingly, most recently, Penelope Cruz, a bona fide international movie star, joined the PETA roster. To Spaniards, French and Italians, it is rather funny because Ms. Cruz is often photographed in Europe wearing fur. We understand the PETA campaigns are just for Public Relations, but still, Whatever happened to truth and honesty?
Once upon a time, there was Eva Mendes who was still favoring her crocodile accessories while “spreading the word” for PETA. Was it another PR ploy to help with her image? That also, didn’t last too long.
We suspected from day one, when Khloé Kardashian became a PETA spokesperson on her family’s reality show, that it wouldn’t last much more than what the contract stipulated. Khloé is way too sassy and too independent….and she proved us right with her recent denouncement of her support in light of sister Kim being “powdered” by the folks at PETA.
For people who went to Parsons The School for Design to study fashion while Tim Gunn was Fashion Dean, Tim Gunn’s anti-fur stand is the irony beyond the irony. He championed the fur program there, which was sponsored by SAGA Furs. Mr. Gunn even had a bunch of fox skins in his office visible for all to see, but since Project Runway took-up steam and he became a TV personality, he took the PR bandwagon to the other side.
The power of PR and its hypocrisies? Things That Make People Go… Hmmmmm!
