2017 Resort Collections Review Part 6

Looking for those statement wardrobe pieces that will take you from work to weekend?  The Sonia by Sonia Rykiel 2017  Resort collections was fit for today’s modern millennial navigating the concrete jungle by day and taunting her prey at night.  A peppered black and white jacket with a jean mini skirt was just enough to rock the office politics. Pretty floral print dresses with circle skirt hem lines were great underpinnings that will work as a foundation for multiple outfits. Electric blue hues and bold reds were traffic stopping colors that, paired together, give a green light to fun. While Rykiel’s working girl muse has some great options in this collection, it doesn’t quite seem to fit the resort aesthetic.

Gabriela Hearst’s resort RTW 2017 collection juxtaposed a tailored, conservative approach with soft, casual details to lend an easy, chic vibe.   Shirt dresses with pockets  had long, flowing sashes and ties to soften the look.  Stark pencil skirts and pants had paper bag waists that folded down to reveal a striped shirt lining. A key piece was a black swing trench coat. Mid thigh in length, it featured a long belt closure.  Hearst’s most versatile look was a three-piece pantsuit and reversible trench. Made from a micro plaid print and solid beige, this was the outfit that speaks to both the relaxed Holly Golightly and the stiff Marion the Librarian.

Oscar de la Renta’s resort 2017 collection was anything but “resort-y”.  But it’s the house of Oscar de la Renta and the rules don’t apply, right? Instead, the collection was a reflection of all that ODLR does so well. Trademark silhouettes including knee-length skirts, cardigans and waist belts, and even those spectator shoes, were all the lady-like looks we’ve come to know and love. There was even a throw-back  column dress with contrasting colored sash belt that brought back happy memories of 1950’s red carpet glam. Presenting a look at the future of the brand, creative director, Peter Copping, pushed the envelope with tiny tufts of black and white mink that created a polka-dot detail against a tweed backdrop to deliver a coat dress for the ages.

Sandy Liang’s resort 2017 collection was an eclectic, fresh mix of casual RTW. The unexpected pairing of simple cotton fabrics with sumptuous fur was the perfect combination of texture and tone. Styling shirt blouses with cut-outs or lace gave the otherwise buttoned-up, stuffy looks a youthful, carefree appeal. Rough, unfinished hems added to the downtown appeal.  The fluffy white lamb jacket was a key piece added as a topper to dresses and blouses. With detachable sleeves and waist, this piece will take you a million miles in style.
